Stipend FAQ
Q: How much money is estimated to be given out in total for stipends?
A: We have to look at the big picture – how many schools are applying? How much are a school's base needs compared to another school? How far are they travelling? The only definite answer I can give is that we have a set budget, and that schools traveling a farther distance will receive priority. If you really need specific numbers, please send in your application so we can talk about your schools unique situation.

Q: What specifics aspect of travel are you looking to cover?
A: Our stipend will cover the needs of a 5 player team. This means our stipend will only cover 1 car, and one hotel room. Other outstanding needs may be considered as well.

Well will NOT cover food, 2+ cars, 2+ hotel rooms, airplane tickets. To be fair to all teams receiving a stipend, we set a limitation so we can award as many teams as possible with a travel stipend while still maximizing the amount awarded to schools who are travelling an exceptional distance to a regional LAN.

Q:I didn't get as much as I asked for!
A: We do our best to maximize the amount we can give to schools, award as many schools as possible, and stay within our budget. We do rough estimates of travel costs and hotel from our end and try to see how closely it matches a schools needs given their request. We then try to find a middle ground that would still provide a school with enough coverage to make it out to an event.

We feel that it is not unreasonable for schools to provide at least $100 of their own funding to travel to an event. However, we do realize that everyone does not have immediate access to travel funds. We are happy to take questions/concerns for schools especially in need.

The reason for the travel stipends is to get as many players and competitors as possible to attend a really kick-ass and unique collegiate LAN event. We WANT to help you out, but please be aware we are working with a budget. We are always available through email for assistance and questions.

Q: When will I know if I receive my stipend reward?
You will receive an email reply with more details, and will have to sign an electronic contract agreeing to terms to accept the funds.

Q: When will my team receive the stipend?
We plan to award schools during or after the event. Stipends are a reimbursement. However, schools with substantial needs may email us with their concerns.

General FAQ

Q:Should we arrive early before the LAN officially begins? (Before 10 AM?)
A:Yes, arrive a bit earlier but we'll compensate for setup time. We expect everyone to begin setting up and signed in at 10am

Q:What kind of gear should we bring specifically? (Power strips, extension cords, Ethernet cords, etc)
A: You MUST bring your own ethernet cords, Power strips will be provided but if you're bringing a desktop or speakers(?) you may need to consider an extra power strip.

Q: Should we bring headsets or headphones? Either?
A: Headphones should be sufficient, headsets if you aim to talk over Skype etc.

Q:How many people are expected to attend?
A: We booked a room that can comfortably fit 250-300 players and spectators for the Irvine LAN, but it depends on how many schools are interested/show up. It will most likely depend region to region. We don't know how many will attend at this point.

Q: How many teams are expected to attend?
A: We're planning for each venue to have about 15 schools attending, and will book and plan accordingly. We will also make adjustments if more/less schools show up.

Q: Should we bring money?
A: Yes, we will not be providing food (but there are delicious and nearby vendors for the Irvine LAN)

Q: How many players can we bring? (We are bringing 9 at the moment)
A: As many as you want, but our stipend will only cover a base team of 5.

Q: How many players from a team can compete?
A: The format will be like the CSL regular season, so 4-5 can compete at a time. If you have more, you can rotate your alternates in between matches.

Q:Is the format for the tournament team league style just like CSL seasonal play?
A: Yes, as answered above.

Q: I see in comments a 2v2 might be a possibility, but does that mean it will be a separate tournament? If so, doesn't that mean it won't be a team league?
A: Again it depends how many schools show up with will dictate the format. If 2v2 is in the format, it will be like the CSL seasonal play with 2v2 being the 3rd set.

Q: Is food provided for us? Should we bring money for fast food? Is food/drink being sold at the LAN?
A: Food is not provided, bring money for food. (Irvine LAN will provide a 10% coupon for the nearby food court)

Q:Are there any casters? Famous appearances?
A: We are still recruiting casters in the area. Famous appearances...TBA :O

Q:Is there an entry fee to the LAN? Can anyone walk in even if they do not belong to a team/not even associated with StarCraft?
A: No entry fee, anyone can attend for free. Even schools not participating in the current season of CSL can sign up to play.

Q:Are attendees allowed to bring Desktops in addition to Laptops?
A: Yes, but it's not recommended for power. If you bring a desktop, you may want to bring an extra power strip.

Q:Can my team sit together?
A: Of course! It is probably best to sit with your team so we know where to find people.

Q:Are non-competitors allowed to ladder with their computers?
A: Yes!

Q:How many staff members will be there?
A: We are making sure we are recruiting enough staff members to run the tournament and stream production. We are aiming to have a dedicated stream/production team and admin team at each event.

For Irvine, we are receiving assistance from a production professionals. We aim to have at least one head administrator present at each LAN to help out with the event. Irvine will have Duran and Tim, Princeton will have Mona and Mark, and we are working out who can attend UMN and TeSPA's LAN events!

Q: Why is none of this posted!?!?!?!?!??!!??!!??!!?!?
A: It is now!

Why does the number of schools dictate whether there is 2v2 or not?

Just so everyone is aware the date of the *Texas* event has been MOVED! The event will now take place on March 17-18. We apologize for the change, but feel that this will allow for a much higher quality and more enjoyable event. More details to come soon!

@arthur: I guess a more definite answer is for now we are really considering 2v2 at these LANs. The reason why I say everything is up in the air is that as of now, i'm typing away several diff format ideas that try to balance # schools with ideal broadcast times, schools travel needs (returning the next day), and finishing the tournament a reasonable hour. We want schools to play as many games as possible, and maximize their enjoyment at these LANs.

Hi, it says that attendees are allowed to bring their computers. However, if we are competing, are we required to bring our computers/monitors, or will the computers/monitors be provided?

It is a BYOC event, we require a minimum of 2 laptops per team (so they can share during matches if not everyone can bring a computer). You will have to bring your own monitor/computers, and if you are bringing a desktop we advise a power strip as well. We are providing power strips, but if you plan on taking up 2+ outlets it wouldn't be a bad idea to provide your own (depending on the seating arrangements).

Also, everyone needs to bring their own ethernet chord. Everything online will be done through a wired connection that the university is setting up for us.

Hopefully in the future, we can have computers/monitors provided!

Hi there, just wanted to point out a small inconsistency that may or may not have been overlooked.
Matches in the regular season require 5 unique players, and disallow the use of a player twice in the first four games. With the LAN rules of a minimum 4 players, the 2v2 would have to allow a re-used player.
The question at hand is whether this re-used player would have to do their 1v1 in the game-4 slot. I believe this requirement is necessary, as this lineup configuration leans towards an emphasis on "team" strength rather than "top player" strength.
